Motosuwa student is a "repeating" (Japanese for "ronin", remember the old vagabonds and masterless samurai) who is seeking to enter college with little success. One day is a chance that seems persocom placed in municipal waste, given its desire (so far impossible due to the high cost) of owning one, decides to take her to his house and turn it on. The
persocom does not seem able to speak or have an operating system installed. The only sound that manages to deliver is "Chii" so Hideki decides to call it that way. Hideki continues his life, working, studying and trying to teach new things to his new persocom, but seems to have a mysterious past behind: there are many people who seek Chii and a second, identical to her, which seems appear at times when the personcon is in danger.
Following clues begin to emerge that Chii is a "Chobits," a particular type of PC extremely elaborate craftsmanship, characteristics of the "Chobits", he whispers into computer networks, would be the ability to feel emotions like humans. From this point the plot becomes more introspective, trying to get through the maze of human feelings and address the issue of love between humans and androids.

At the end of the series Hideki becomes convinced of the love he feels for Chii and declares, by Chii find "the only man for me."
